Overview

Utilization Management is an organisationwide, interdisciplinary approach to balancing cost, quality and risk concerns in the provision of patient care. It is an expansion of traditional utilization review activities to encompass the management of all available healthcare resources and including management staff. Healthcare organisations that want to increase value from utilization management would need to adopt a risk-based, data-driven approach to replace the traditional disease-centric utilization management model. It involves strategies on how to contain costs, maintain quality and reduce unnecessary and inefficient care. Some studies show that up to one-third of medical care today maybe unwarranted, and efforts to control utilization of services are understandable. The question is not whether to do utilization management-it is how to do it better.

Objectives

Two important questions that Utilisation management deals with would be answered at this workshop:

First, how do we ensure that people get needed medical care without spending so much that other important social objectives are compromised?

Second, how can unnecessary and inappropriate medical services be discouraged  without jeopardizing  necessary high-quality care?

In addition, participants would understand legal aspect of medical malpractice claims
